Grot & Flair

Specimen № 07 · Spring 2026 · variable, 3 axes + 1 secret

GF Meander

A serif that refuses to walk in a straight line. Weight from hairline 100 to poster 900, optical sizes cut for 9 pt footnotes and 144 pt shopfronts — and a Wonk axis that lets the letters lean like sorts pulled from a worn case.

wght 340 100–900
opsz 144 9–144
WONK 1.00 0–1

The glyph follows your cursor — weight runs east, optical size runs north. Flick fast for wonk. Type any key to swap the glyph.

One font a season. Inked hard, shipped when the wonk is right.

Grot & Flair releases exactly one variable font per season. No filler weights, no “coming soon” families, no subscription meter running while you sleep. GF Meander is release № 07 — drawn, hinted, axed, and proofed on the machine you’re holding.

§ 01 — Waterfall

Sizes 18 to 84, axes driven by scroll

Each line tracks its distance from the centre of your screen: heavier and more generous in the middle, lighter at the edges. Stop scrolling and the wave holds. Every line is a true pangram — all twenty-six letters, no filler.

84Sphinx of black quartz, judge my vow.

64Quick jabs of wonky serif dazzle the vexing poem.

48Waltz, bad nymph, for quick jigs vex.

38How vexingly quick daft zebras jump!

30Jackdaws love my big sphinx of quartz.

24Pack my box with five dozen liquor jugs.

18The five boxing wizards jump quickly, then reset the chase, mind the kerns.

§ 02 — The design space

Forty-five coordinates, one letter

Every cell is the same lowercase a pinned to a different coordinate: weight runs west to east, optical size runs top to bottom, and a slow wave of Wonk rolls through the whole map. This is the entire font — not forty-five files, one.

§ 03 — Under the hood

The switchboard

Flip the switches. Nothing here is an image — every sample re-shapes in place, the way it will in your layout engine.

Wonk

Set straight. Now set slightly wrong.

The house axis. Stems lean and terminals kick, the way sorts sat in a worn case. Same file, no restart.

Optical size

Ink traps open at nine point.

Same words, same size on your screen — but the 9 pt drawing is sturdier, dug out for ink squeeze. The 144 pt cut is all blade.

Ligatures

Offbeat waffle shuffle: fi fl ff ffl

Type f-i, get two sorts fighting. Switch them on and the pairs arrive already holding hands.

The italic

A flick of the wrist, drawn not slanted.

A true secondary — new a, new g, new rhythm. Not your roman shoved sideways.

The secret fourth axis

SOFT 0 / 100

Crisp when you need it. Buttered when you don’t.

§ 04 — Character set

418 glyphs, 187 shown

Latin extended, five figure styles, and the punctuation drawer nobody sweeps. Run your pointer across the case — the proof panel sets each sort at 144 pt.

A grid showing the character set of GF Meander: the Latin alphabet in capitals and lowercase, figures, accented characters, punctuation and currency symbols.

§ 06 — The foundry

Two people, one rule

Grot & Flair is Ines Marder and Tomas Rehn, working out of a former print shop in Antwerp. Ines draws — pencil first, always. Tomas engineers the axes, the hinting, and the tooling that lets two people ship what usually takes ten. The rule: one variable font a season, and only when the wonk is right.
